The Katy’s Courage Scholarship
The Katy’s Courage Scholarship is named in memory of Katy Stewart, a lifelong resident of Sag Harbor, New York who in 2010 lost her battle to a rare form of liver cancer. The scholarship honors Katy’s character, embodied by kindness, empathy and courage. It is awarded to a worthy Pierson High School senior attending a four year college or university and based on several criteria, but ultimately will go to the student who best mirrors the role of the quiet hero, leading by example, with contributions to school and community evidenced through every day conduct characterized in kindness, goodness, respect and empathy toward fellow classmates, teachers, and staff. Activities and grades will be considered, but are not the only deciding factor. The names of the candidates will be anonymous to the selection committee during the selection process. Teacher recommendation and personal essay will be valuable to the committee. The scholarship is a $10,000.00 award. It will be paid over 4 years, with $2500.00 per year provided the recipient remains in good academic standing. Guidelines will be provided to the winner.
